REH 110: Introduction to Disability Services

For this experience, I spent 48 continuous hours in a wheelchair to get some semblance of what it would be like if I ever ended up having to utilize a wheelchair for the rest of my life. Not only have I learned a great deal about myself during this assignment, I have also learned that being able bodied is something that can change for anyone, at any time.

This study gave me a much deeper insight to a condition that I knew very little about. Not just interviewing the person with the spinal cord injury, but also doing an actual spinal cord research paper where I learned so much more about spinal cord injuries, their causes, and effects.

This assignment gave me the opportunity to explore and learn how to include an individual with any type of disability in any activity or sport enjoyed by able bodied people.

REH 120: Introduction to Social Work

In doing this assignment, I had the opportunity to see that food insufficiency is not just a third world problem, but is also a problem for many people here in this country, and even here at college. On the up side, the opportunity to be a part of the services provided by the Captain's Cupboard, is one that I will value forever.

REH 200: Counseling and the Helping Relationship

This course was integral approach to bringing together all of the characteristics of an effective helper in a clear, direct, and professional manner. In this course, the main concepts that were focused on and addressed were effective listening and communication skills, empathy, cultural awareness, self-awareness, confidentiality and its limits, and the ethical standards which should guide the counselor's behavior and decision making process.

This particular artifact is an assignment on race that was done for a Special and Diverse Populations course I took at Southern Maine Community College

Non Rehabilitation Services Course - Introduction to Sociology

This course was particularly one of  my favorite courses because I learned a great deal about how politics, policies, and laws promote and influence inequality. I also learned a lot about different cultures, norms within those cultures, and ways in which these different cultures interact with each other.

Sociology Presentation

This You Tube video was used as an illustration on inequality for a presentation for an Introduction to Sociology course I took while attending Southern Maine Community College.

REH 305: Group Process

This assignment gave me an opportunity to work with someone from a different cultural background in which we shared ideas about ways of relating to others. The exploration of ideas gave me an opportunity to learn about how others communicate in relation to one another.

This assignment is to explore the ideas surrounding decisions that people make; the results of those decisions, the adjustments that are made as a result, as well as the intricate connection between the three concepts listed that is often lost in some societies and demographics. Change is a fundamental concept; however, very complex in its process. In this group, the ideas and process of choices, consequences, and changes will be addressed.

REH 310: Casework

This assignment gave me an opportunity to experience the actual process of what it is really like to do an actual client intake. A lot more goes into this process than I had initially thought; however, the importance of the details in this process are directly related to the treatment process.

This treatment plan assignment was an extension of the intake, and devised around all of the things that were learned during the intake process. This was also a very valuable learning experience in how the two processes work together for the benefit of the client.

This Resource Directory assignment was about creating an easy to use directory for people with a variety of service needs. This particular assignment has helped me come to an important realization: how to find resources in a particular community even when there appear to be none.

REH 380: Seminar in Professionalism

This assignment is a reflection of how and why I have chosen the profession of Rehabilitation Services as a career path. This is particularly important because the professional path I have decided to follow is directly connected to a plethora of unpleasant experiences in my life. As unfortunate as many of these experiences were, they were absolutely necessary for me to be successful in the career field I have chosen. The insight and understanding I have gained from these experiences are the most important factors of my journey.
